Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users buying such medications must be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated weight return.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication describe a intense return of hunger.

"It felt as if something activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
