Area Police
Around fifty automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.
Officers state they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The substance had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Police then found many other marked vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report preliminary tests suggest the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; investigators are currently not aware of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they stated.
City officials stated they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
A senior official stated the vandalism left him stunned and needed to be solved promptly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the right-wing attack in 2020," he stated on social media, referring to the killing of nine people by a shooter aiming at individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
